Zachary Taylor, the Mexican War general nominated by the Whig Party for president in June 1848, appears here as a campaign figure rather than as a battlefield commander. Nathaniel Currier, the New York lithographer who later partnered with James Ives, published this sheet in New York around 1848, and the Library of Congress holds its copyright deposit of June 23, 1848, just two weeks after the Whig convention. The hand-applied watercolor was typical of Currier's campaign work, when quick, colored prints for a presidential race sold briskly.
