The banner "For President of the People" gives this lithograph its character, set within a badge-style design that names Zachary Taylor. Dated about 1846 and probably published in Philadelphia, it comes from a time when Taylor was known mainly as the army commander who had won victories at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma in the Mexican-American War. The same design also appeared on a sheet music cover, and both were registered for copyright, suggesting the image was meant to reach many supporters. Taylor was nominated by the Whigs and won the presidency in 1848.
