Few stereographs show a sitting president inside a military tent, and this one records William McKinley calling on Major General Joseph Wheeler at Camp Wikoff. The camp, at Montauk Point on the eastern tip of Long Island, was set up in 1898 to quarter American troops returning from Cuba, many of them weakened by malaria, yellow fever and typhoid. Wheeler, a former Confederate cavalry officer who was commissioned a major general of volunteers for the war with Spain, was among the commanders there. The card was issued by the New York firm Strohmeyer & Wyman, whose stereo views of the period were popular with home viewers.
