Upper Klamath Lake, in south-central Oregon, is shown from a survey encampment the record labels "Camp 28," a numbered stop that suggests the view was drawn during a systematic march rather than a casual visit. The print belongs to the federal exploration and survey literature of the 1850s, when army topographers mapped western routes for a possible transcontinental railroad and published illustrated reports of what they found. Because the record's details come from an unverified caption card, the exact survey party and date should be checked against the original reports. Even so, the image is a useful glimpse of how government expeditions recorded unfamiliar landscapes in color.
