Looking northeast from the village of Westport on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, this view shows a stretch of New York landscape that drew summer travelers in the late 1880s. The photographer, Seneca Ray Stoddard, was known for documenting the Adirondacks and the lake country of northern New York, and he sold his numbered views to visitors as souvenirs. The subject tracings on the original caption card point to hotels in Westport, which suggests the lakeside village was already a stop for tourists by 1889. Stoddard's work from this period offers a useful record of how the shoreline looked before later development.
