Oliver Hazard Perry's American squadron defeated a British fleet under Robert Barclay on September 10, 1813, and this halftone reproduction, made around 1916, shows that naval engagement from the painting by W.H. Powell. Powell's scene places the viewer among the ships in the thick of the fighting, a dramatic choice typical of nineteenth-century paintings that celebrated national victories. Perry's dispatch after the battle, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," became one of the most quoted lines of the War of 1812. Halftone printing, which let books and periodicals reproduce paintings with tonal detail, helped carry images like this to a wide audience.
