This view shows troops on the road, with the caption placing them "on the way to the Battle of Gettysburg" as members of Company L, Second Regulars. The record gives no date for the original photograph, though a catalog note ties it to July 1863, when the battle was fought July 1 to 3 near the Pennsylvania town. The picture survives as a halftone reproduction printed in Francis Trevelyan Miller's *Photographic History of the Civil War*, published in 1911, so readers saw it nearly half a century after the campaign. Another caption note lists the unit as a cavalry regiment, so the identification is worth checking against other sources.
