Stanley's own title, "cutting his way through the dark continent," points to the Ituri forest, which Henry Morton Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1887 to 1889 had to hack through with axes and machetes. The color lithograph shows the explorer at the center of the scene, and its subjects include African figures and fighting, reflecting how Europeans and Americans of the period often pictured Africa as a violent wilderness awaiting conquest. Stanley's journey drew enormous attention in the press, so prints like this one helped shape public ideas about exploration and empire.
