Here Hermann Göring poses with Mucki, a lion cub he kept as a pet, in a photograph dated April 5, 1936. Göring, who had risen to become one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany and head of the new Luftwaffe, was known for his fondness for hunting and for keeping animals, and images like this one showed a warmer, more personal side of a figure otherwise associated with the regime's military and political machinery. The picture is a useful reminder of how carefully official photography presented leading Nazis to the public during the 1930s.
