A laborer hoisting a heavy load onto his back is the subject here, shown mid-adjustment with his pack shifted and his body braced under the weight. The stereograph dates to about 1903 and came from the Universal Photo Art Company, a firm that produced stereo cards for home parlor viewers during the early twentieth century, when Korea was drawing growing Western interest as a travel destination. The word "coolie," used on the caption, was a common term at the time for a hired porter or manual laborer in East Asia, and porters like this one carried goods over rough roads and mountain paths. The record notes that its data is unverified, so the exact location and the man's identity remain unknown.
