Few places in Seoul carried more weight in 1896 than the Russian Legation, where King Gojong took refuge that February after leaving his palace. Foreign legations of this kind sat at the center of the contest among Japan, China, and Russia over Korea, and the king's stay of roughly a year there reshaped the government in Seoul. The caption card for this view is old and unverified, so the details it lists, such as statues, gates, and palaces, should be read as likely subjects rather than confirmed contents.
