The American consulate in Seoul was one of the few Western diplomatic posts in Korea during the years when the Korean Empire lost its sovereignty to Japan, which annexed the peninsula in 1910. Frank G. Carpenter, a travel writer who circulated his own photographs and letters to American newspapers, documented many foreign outposts in Asia during this period. The record dates the print only tentatively, to between 1910 and 1920, so its exact date is uncertain. Still, it captures a diplomatic building at a moment when the country's political future was being decided by outside powers.
