Among photographs of Seoul's old fortifications, this one focuses on the northeast gate of the city walls that once enclosed the capital of the Joseon dynasty. The image dates to 1896, when Korea was under growing pressure from Japan, China and Russia and Western travelers were beginning to record the city's architecture. Its catalog tags also mention palaces, river landings and pagodas, but those labels come from an old caption card and have not been verified against the image. Look at the heavy timber framing, the curved tile roof and the stone base, which show the construction typical of Korean gate towers of the period.
