A single-wheeled cart in Seoul around 1904 sets this stereograph apart from the other street scenes of the period. The caption names the figure as a general of the old regime, but that detail comes from an unverified caption card, so it is worth treating with caution. By the early 1900s Seoul was the capital of the Korean Empire, and Underwood & Underwood, the American firm that issued the card, sold stereographs of distant places to home viewers who saw them in three dimensions through a stereoscope. Carts like this one, a wooden frame carried on a single wheel, moved goods through the city's streets, so the picture shows everyday transport as well as rank.
