A carved stone turtle, a bixi, stands near the great bell in Seoul, a pairing that shows how the city's public monuments drew on older Korean tradition. Turtles like this one often served as bases for stone tablets and were associated with longevity and endurance, which made them fitting companions for a bell that marked the hours of the city. The photograph dates to 1896, a few years after the Sino-Japanese War had unsettled the old order on the peninsula, and it captures a Seoul still shaped by its palaces, gates and pagodas. Look closely at the statue's worn surface, which hints at how long such carvings had stood in the open air.
