David Devant, the English conjuror, is shown with his "spirit wife," a stage presence that drew on the late-Victorian fascination with spiritualism and apparent contact with the dead. The image appeared on the cover of *Mahatma*, a magazine devoted to magic and the occult, in its October 1893 issue. In the early 1890s Devant was building his reputation in English stage magic, and his illusions traded on the same public appetite for séances and spirit phenomena. The print is a wood engraving or halftone, and some details come from an older caption card, so a few specifics remain unconfirmed.
