The caption, "Who does not love wine, wife & song, will be a fool for his lifelong!", is a German-style proverb, and the advertiser's name, And. Schwabe, appears beneath it. The lithograph was issued in New York by Kimmel & Voigt, whose Canal Street address is printed on the sheet, and the original sketch was made by W. Voigt. It was registered for copyright in 1873. Shops of this kind in the city often used lively scenes like this one to attract customers in taverns and storefronts, where the picture did the selling. Its pairing of wine, romance and music shows the sentimental, good-humored tone common in commercial art of the 1870s.
