Keppler's color lithograph, published in *Puck* on August 15, 1900, turns the Boxer Rebellion into a grim allegory, with the American eagle and a death theme shaping the scene. The title, "The real trouble will come with the Wake," points to the anxiety over what would follow the uprising and the foreign military intervention in China that summer. Joseph Keppler, a Vienna-born cartoonist, founded *Puck* in 1876 and used its color lithographs to comment on politics. The card's tracings place the print under imperialism and the Boxer Rebellion, which makes it a useful record of how American readers were asked to view the country's role abroad.
