Its title asks a pointed question about a marriage of convenience, and the caricature casts Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin as an odd newlywed pair. The drawing was probably published in the *Washington Star* in October 1939, weeks after the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact of August 23 and after Germany and the Soviet Union had divided Poland between them that September. American editorial cartoonists often used such pairings to suggest that the agreement rested on mutual advantage rather than trust. The catalog record does not name the artist, so the drawing's maker remains unidentified.
