Few keepsakes of the 1860s name their subjects as plainly as this one, which commemorates three Fenians hanged in Manchester, England, on November 23, 1867, and remembered as the Manchester Martyrs. They were convicted of killing a police sergeant during the September 1867 rescue of two imprisoned Fenian leaders, a case that drew wide attention in both Britain and Ireland. The inscription gives their final words as "God save Ireland," a phrase that soon became a rallying cry for Irish nationalists on both sides of the Atlantic. No date is recorded, so the piece most likely dates from the years just after the hangings.
