The title of this 1899 poster, "Last Days of the Century or the Light of Liberty," pairs a circus with a patriotic allegory and a nod to the century's close. The Ringling Brothers, five siblings from Baraboo, Wisconsin, had built their traveling show into a major tour by then, and their advertising leaned on parades meant to draw crowds into the streets ahead of the performance. The sheet was printed in Buffalo, New York, by the Courier Lithograph Company, a firm known for the large colored posters that circuses used to announce their arrival in town.
