This chromolithographed poster advertises the traveling show that joined the Forepaugh and Sells Brothers circuses, two rival tent companies that merged under one name in the mid-1890s. Its captions, "Leap year ladies of laughter" and "See the new woman in a novel sphere," tie the spectacle to the "new woman," the term for the independent, educated women who drew public debate in the 1890s. Circus posters of this era were built to catch the eye from a street wall, so their bright color and crowded scenes were meant to sell tickets as much as entertain.
