Richard and William Howe, two British brothers who held senior posts in the war against the American colonies, are the figures at the center of this London etching from October 1777. Richard commanded the navy and William the army, and the print imagines their conversation as a bargain over how to profit from the conflict, with the devil standing in as a symbol of avarice. It was published by W. Williams on Fleet Street, one of many British satires that accused officials of enriching themselves while the war dragged on. The title, *The Conference Between the Brothers: How to Get Rich*, states the charge directly.
