This copper engraving takes its title from the span of the Qianlong Emperor's reign, the years 1736 to 1795, and presents his military campaigns as a sequence of victories. The record dates the plates to 1769 through 1796, so the prints were made after many of the campaigns they depict. The best-known engraved series of this kind was made in Paris from designs by Jesuit painters at the Qing court, including Giuseppe Castiglione, and it was meant to glorify the emperor's wars in Central Asia. Such prints are notable as an early European view of Chinese court imagery, shaped by both Chinese and Western artistic conventions.
