This engraving takes its title from a span that covers nearly the whole reign of the Qianlong emperor, who ruled China from 1735 to 1796, and the print's own date range of 1769 to 1796 places its production within that long period. Qing court painters, including Jesuit artists working in Beijing, recorded the emperor's military campaigns in Central Asia, and European engravers later translated those paintings into copperplate prints, which gave Western audiences some of their first detailed views of the Qing campaigns. Copper engraving allowed fine line detail and wide distribution, so these images shaped European ideas about Chinese imperial power.
