Printed from a copper engraving, this plate takes its title from the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, whose rule in China ran from 1735 to 1796, and the title's span of 1736 to 1795 reflects that long period of campaigns. The record dates the print to 1769 through 1796, a window that places it in the decades when European engravers were reproducing the emperor's military triumphs for Western audiences. The images drew on designs by court painters, including the Jesuit missionary Giuseppe Castiglione, who worked in Beijing. Viewers today can read the plate as both a record of imperial conquest and an example of how European printmakers shaped images of China.
