Chinese bulbuls are small songbirds of Asia, and this print gives them the close, careful attention that natural history illustrations of the period were known for. The record does not name the artist, the publisher, or a date, so the exact origin is uncertain. Prints of this kind were widely circulated in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Western readers relied on engravings and lithographs to learn about foreign wildlife they could not see firsthand. Bulbuls, with their crested heads and lively habits, were a favorite subject for such images, and the picture is worth a look for the way it blends observation with decorative design.
