This photographic reproduction records a small portrait miniature of two brothers, James McNeill Whistler, then 15, and his younger brother William, 13. The original painting dates to about 1850, when James was still years away from the artistic career that would make him one of the best-known American painters of the late nineteenth century. Miniatures of this kind were usually painted on ivory or metal and were prized as keepsakes, so a copy like this shows how families preserved and shared images of their children. The print was made between 1900 and 1920 and is one of three copies held by the Library, with one mounted by a Mystic, Connecticut photographer. It belongs to the Pennell Collection of Whistleriana, assembled by the writers Elizabeth and Joseph Pennell, who documented Whistler's life and work.
