William Joseph Hardee, the Confederate lieutenant general pictured here, was a career Army officer whose manual of infantry and cavalry tactics, known as "Hardee's Tactics," was used by both sides at the start of the Civil War. Born in Georgia in 1815 and trained at West Point, he later commanded corps in the Army of Tennessee and the Army of Tennessee's successor forces in the Atlanta and Carolinas campaigns. This portrait comes from the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection, cataloged as number 4849, and was taken sometime between 1861 and 1865 and printed later.
