Despite its title, this print is a composite rather than a photograph of Ulysses S. Grant at City Point. Its head comes from a portrait taken at Grant's Cold Harbor headquarters, its horse and rider from a photograph of Maj. Gen. Alexander McDowell McCook, and its background from Confederate prisoners captured at Fisher's Hill. City Point, the Union supply base on the James River, was where Grant directed the Petersburg campaign in 1864 and 1865, which explains the title. Composites like this were common in the period, and this one was likely made around 1902 by L.C. Handy.
