A woman identified as Mrs. Charles E. Allen of Glasgow, Scotland, is credited in the caption with landing this tarpon at St. James City, a fishing village on Pine Island in southwest Florida. Tarpon, often called the "silver king," drew sport anglers to the Gulf coast in the 1880s and 1890s, when hooking one of these large, leaping fish was considered a prized achievement. The date is only estimated as falling between 1884 and 1891, and the names come from an old caption card that has not been verified, so the details should be read with that in mind.
