Grew, the American ambassador to Japan, stands with Saitō's widow and daughters in this 1939 print, taken on April 17 in connection with the funeral rites for Hiroshi Saitō. Saitō had been Japan's ambassador to the United States and died in Washington in 1939. His remains were returned to Japan aboard the U.S. Navy cruiser *Astoria*, a gesture of respect that drew wide attention at the time. The photograph records a rare moment of formal public courtesy between the two nations just before tensions over the war in China and Japan's expansion grew more severe.
