Here the subject is Mary Magdalene, the biblical figure at the center of Mary of Magdala, the play in which Minnie Maddern Fiske appeared around 1903. Fiske was one of the leading American actresses of her day, and this poster was printed by the Grignard Lithograph Company in New York, with the copyright held by her husband, Harrison gray Fiske. The design is credited to Ernest Haskell, an American illustrator and etcher. The color lithograph shows how theatrical posters of the early 1900s relied on bold portraiture and flat, decorative color to make a star's name visible from the street.
