Here the Scottish Reformer John Knox scolds the women of Mary, Queen of Scots' court, a scene that stands for the wider clash between Protestant preachers and a Catholic monarch. Knox returned to Scotland in 1559 and preached fiercely against the Mass and courtly display, while Mary, raised in France and a Catholic, found him a persistent irritant during her reign from 1561 to 1567. Scenes like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when Knox was often cast as a stern champion of moral reform. The print's date and maker are not confirmed, so its exact origin remains uncertain.
