A stout bull standing in for England gives this etching its central figure, and the title "John Bull Triumphant" announces the joke before the viewer reaches the details. The print was issued in London in January 1780 by W. Humphrey from his shop on the Strand. John Arbuthnot had introduced John Bull as a national personification in 1712, and by the late 1770s he was a familiar figure in English political caricature. In 1780 Britain was fighting the American colonies, and France and Spain had joined the war against it, so a boast of triumph invites a closer look at how the nation's fortunes actually stood.
