Shown here as a 1940 halftone, this portrait of John Wilkes Booth was printed opposite page 16 of George S. Bryan's book *The Great American Myth*. It reproduces an earlier photoprint from a New York studio, and the catalog notes that its caption information is old and unverified. Booth, a stage actor from a Maryland family of performers, shot Abraham Lincoln at Ford's theater in April 1865 and was killed in Virginia about twelve days later. Bryan's book is one of several works that disputed the official account of Booth's death, so the picture is often viewed alongside that long debate.
