This portrait shows Hugh Forbes, an English-born soldier who had fought in Italian uprisings alongside Giuseppe Garibaldi before he crossed paths with John Brown. In 1857 Brown hired Forbes to drill and organize his followers for a planned slave insurrection, but the two quarreled over strategy and money. Forbes later revealed details of the plan to Senator William Seward in 1858, which Brown saw as a serious betrayal. The record does not give a date or confirm the printmaking method, but the figure belongs to the circle of abolitionist and militant activity that led to Harpers Ferry in 1859.
