Two guitarists, Gabriel Brown and Rochelle French, stand together in this June 1935 photograph taken in Eatonville, Florida. Incorporated in 1887, Eatonville is widely regarded as one of the first all-Black municipalities in the United States, and it was also the hometown of writer Zora Neale Hurston. The picture belongs to the Lomax collection of folk musician photographs, part of the Library of Congress's effort to document Southern vernacular music in the 1930s. Its focus on the instruments and the players offers a direct record of the guitar-based music performed in rural and small-town Black communities of that era.
