Two musicians, Gabriel Brown and Rochelle French, are the figures named in this June 1935 photograph taken in Eatonville, Florida. Eatonville was founded in 1887 as one of the first all-Black incorporated municipalities in the United States, which gives the town a particular place in African American history. The picture belongs to the Lomax collection of folk musician photographs, assembled during the field recording work of John and Alan Lomax in the 1930s, when they documented Southern Black musicians and their traditions for the Library of Congress.
