A daughter of the abolitionist John Brown, Sarah Brown is the sitter named on this card, which gives his lifespan as 1800 to 1859. Brown spent much of the 1850s in Kansas, where the fight over slavery turned violent, and his 1859 raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, drew national attention to his family. The card records no date for the photograph, and its notes mark the information as unverified, so the sitter's identity and the picture's age are worth confirming against other sources.
