Cropsey set this view in the Starucca Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, where the Erie Railroad crossed the ravine on a long stone viaduct, and he gave the scene the reds and golds of autumn. Jasper Francis Cropsey was a leading Hudson River School painter, and his work often paired wilderness with signs of the growing rail network. This color lithograph was issued for members of the Crosby Opera House Art Association, which made it a members-only piece. Notice how the viaduct's arches stand as a small human line against the rolling, wooded hills.
