Hand-colored and dated 1862 in its title line, this Currier & Ives lithograph shows the second battle of Bull Run, fought in late August near Manassas, Virginia. The New York firm issued many scenes of Civil War fighting, often within weeks of the events, to meet public demand for news from the front. The battle ended in a Union defeat, as John Pope's Army of Virginia was driven back by Robert E. Lee's forces and fell back toward Washington. Readers of the day would have seen the print as a quick, popular view of a grim setback.
