Though the title names Bunker's Hill, most of the fighting on June 17, 1775, took place on neighboring Breed's Hill above Boston, a distinction many later pictures blurred. British forces took the position after several assaults, but at a heavy cost in officers and men, and the battle became an early emblem of colonial resistance in the Revolutionary War. No date is recorded for this print, and an old catalog note linking it to a name, Müller, has not been verified, so the maker and the date of printing remain open questions. Viewers can still weigh how the image chooses to frame the struggle for that hilltop.
