From Baldface Hill, this sketch looks across toward the village of Groveton, the ground where the Second Battle of Bull Run opened in late August 1862. Stonewall Jackson's troops struck Union forces near Groveton on August 28, and the larger fighting on August 29 and 30 ended with a Confederate victory under Robert E. Lee and a Union retreat under John Pope. The record gives no artist's name and only a date range of 1861 to 1865, so the drawing's exact origin is uncertain. Its ground-level view still shows how the open fields and wooded rises shaped the movement of troops.
