Rain turns the road into the main obstacle in this July 1863 pencil drawing, which shows 30-pounder guns being hauled toward the front during the pursuit of Robert E. Lee's army. After the Union victory at Gettysburg, Lee withdrew southward toward the Potomac, and George Meade's army followed slowly, with heavy artillery and supply wagons struggling through mud and downpours. The artist signed only with the initials "E.F.," and the sketch records the hard logistics of the chase rather than a battle itself. Field drawings like this were often reworked for illustrated newspapers, which gave northern readers a sense of the campaign's hardships.
