Chaplain Edgar T. Chapman is the figure at the center of this pencil and wash drawing, shown leading divine service in front of the headquarters of General William F. Smith before Petersburg, Virginia, on July 3, 1864. The scene is a rare glimpse of a religious gathering set in the army's camp life during the siege of Petersburg, which had begun in June 1864 after Grant's forces crossed the James. Such chaplains of volunteer regiments conducted worship, comforted the sick and wrote letters for soldiers, and sketches like this one recorded those routines for readers at home.
