Few pairings in the Second World War were as consequential as the one shown here, with the Army's chief of staff standing beside one of its most combative field commanders. George C. Marshall directed American military policy from 1939 to 1945, while George S. Patton earned his reputation leading armored and infantry forces in North Africa, Sicily and across France. The caption card gives no date, so the occasion is uncertain, but the print comes from Patton's own papers, held in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division.
