The title points to the Kazakh steppe, where the Turkic-speaking Kazakh people were traditionally herders moving with their livestock across open grassland. In the 1950s, Soviet agricultural campaigns converted large stretches of that land into cultivated fields, a change that shaped the region's landscape and its people's way of life. The print combines etching and engraving, a technique that lets a printmaker pair softly bitten tonal areas with sharper, hand-cut lines. The artist's pencil signature and date, written by hand on the sheet, identify the work as dated 1965.
