Langley Field, the Army air station near Hampton, Virginia, is the setting for this scene of airmen recording the results of bombing practice in 1932. Underwood & Underwood, a photography firm that supplied news and stock pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, made the print. In the early 1930s the Army Air Corps relied on practice drops like these to train crews in accuracy, a skill that would matter greatly in the years ahead. The caption card dates the picture to September 15, 1932, though that date has not been independently verified.
