A pencil drawing titled "The steeple chase" shows General Thomas Francis Meagher, the Irish-born commander of the Union army's Irish Brigade, in a playful scene for St. Patrick's Day, 1863. The record credits the work only to the initials "EF," so the artist is unidentified. Irish regiments marked the holiday in camp with parades, feasts and contests, and by March 1863 the brigade was encamped in Virginia after its heavy losses at Fredericksburg the previous December. A sketch like this one offered soldiers and onlookers a lighter view of an officer they knew well.
